Instituto Cultural Oaxaca Spanish School
Instituto Cultural Oaxaca (ICO) is at Avenida Juárez 909 in Centro, a ten-minute walk from the Templo de Santo Domingo and fifteen minutes from the Zócalo. Founded in 1984, we were the first Spanish language school in Oaxaca, and over four decades later, we still teach the way we always have: through the culture of Oaxaca.
Our classrooms open onto a courtyard garden. Mornings focus on building real Spanish communication skills — grammar, listening, and speaking through our communicative approach. Afternoons at ICO are built around one idea: Spanish is best learned through experience, not repetition. Workshops in Oaxacan cooking, Zapotec weaving from Santo Tomás Jalieza, and traditional red clay pottery from San Marcos Tlapazola happen here at the school. Others take you into the city, walking the barrios of Jalatlaco and Xochimilco, or exploring Oaxaca through photography. Either way, you leave speaking.
ICO offers Spanish language courses for every level — from absolute beginner to advanced (C2) — including specialized instruction for heritage speakers through Spanish Language Programs, Private Spanish Classes, Cultural Workshops, and DELE Exam Preparation.

Communicate with Spanish-speaking patients with more confidence and less hesitation. Our Spanish for Healthcare Professionals course is taught one-on-one or two-on-one, two hours a day, over one or two weeks, scheduled around you rather than a fixed calendar. Sessions cover clinical vocabulary, patient history-taking, and the phrasing that actually comes up in an exam room, with role-play built on real cases. Designed for healthcare providers at intermediate level and above. Tell us your arrival dates, and we'll build the schedule around them.
